The 2021-2022 Southern Hemisphere cyclone season trilogy is now complete. In the Southwest Indian Ocean, 2022 produced the latest start to the season since records began. However, the late season was all but contrary, with 13 storms ultimately forming, and 5 cyclones even reaching major cyclone status. Destructive impacts were felt in eastern Africa, especially in Madagascar and Mozambique through storms such as Cyclone Batsirai and a relentless march of other systems. Unfortunately, over 800 people were killed and left with a price tag of US$1.882bn, one of the most destructive seasons on record.
