Large Cyclone Approaching India, Sri Lanka – Tropical Weather Bulletin December 7, 2022

A large cyclone has developed in the Bay of Bengal over the course of the last 24 hours, and is now blowing up winds of 50 miles per hour as it approaches the coast of southern India and Sri Lanka. Tropical storm winds are expected to begin later today as the storm draws nearer, and will likely peak before tomorrow; weakening will begin before the storm eventually makes landfall near Chennai late this week.

Meanwhile, the Atlantic is also attempting to produce late-season activity, with a non-tropical low taking shape in the open ocean. The system will continue northeastwards and the window for formation into a tropical or subtropical cyclone should close by the end of the week.

In the Western Pacific, a tropical cyclone could form by the weekend as it approaches the Philippine islands, and is likely to deliver heavy rainfall to Samar and the Bicol Region, regardless of development. This system could become a typhoon as it curves northwards east of Luzon next week.
