As of 16Z, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center is still closely monitoring Gaemi’s position in Taiwan and has now issued critical warnings to the coastal regions of China.

Current Information

Cone forecast of Typhoon Gaemi as of 12Z
Cone forecast of Typhoon Gaemi as of 12Z

Gaemi was located at 23.7°N, 121.7°E, and was moving southwest at 9 miles per hour. The current intensity from JTWC is estimated to be 110kt, with a minimum central pressure of 928mb. Radar data from CWA’s AWS indicates an approximated mean sea level pressure of 961.2 hPa near or in the center, with peak wind gusts reaching 48.1 m/s.

Current Warnings and Watches

The Central Weather Administration of Taiwan has again issued a “Sea and Land” typhoon warning for all regions of Taiwan. The National Meteorological Center, China, also issued a Red typhoon warning to Fujian. As for damaging winds and precipitation orders, please stay indoors, follow the CWA instructions, and prepare for arrival if you’re in Fujian. If you live in one of the regions affected by Gaemi’s path as of damaging winds and precipitation in order, please stay indoors, follow the instructions of CWA, and prepare for the arrival if you’re in Fujian.

Current Forecast

Gaemi will continue weakening as it traverses through Taiwan and will land over Fujian again tomorrow evening, still as a broad system. It is expected to go further inland and dissipate over the weekend, yet its remnants, coupled with the monsoon, will still bring precipitation to the Philippines, Central, and Southern China.

Gaemi is now a massive typhoon and is expected to curve to Taiwan and land in the next few hours, potentially leaving out significant damage during landfall. As of 00Z, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center is still closely monitoring Gaemi’s position and has now issued critical warnings to the entire region of Taiwan.

Current Information

Cone forecast of Typhoon Gaemi as of 00Z
Cone forecast of Typhoon Gaemi as of 00Z

Recently, Gaemi was located at 23.5 degrees north, 123.3 degrees east, and was moving northwest at 7 miles per hour. The current intensity from JTWC is estimated to be 120kt, with a minimum central pressure of 0f 935mb. However, recent radar velocity data from early morning in Ishigaki suggested a higher intensity, as high as 140-145kt, as 01:05Z data showed a 165kt 4-binned velocity at around 2km height.

Current Warnings and Watches

The Central Weather Administration of Taiwan has issued a “Sea and Land” typhoon warning for almost all regions except Kinmen County. Additionally, the JMA has issued emergency storm surge warnings for the areas of Yaeyama and Miyakojima. In the Philippines, the PAGASA has issued red rainfall warnings for Metro Manila, Bulacan, Pampanga, Rizal, Bataan, and Zambales, as continuous rainfall has led to massive rainfall amounts. If you live in one of the regions affected by Gaemi’s path, please monitor additional warnings or watches issued by your national meteorological service in your area.

Current Forecast

From the cone forecast issued by the JTWC, Gaemi will curve and make landfall on the island of Taiwan by July 24th at approximately 12Z, then move into the mainland of China on July 25th at 12Z.

The 2023 Pacific Typhoon Season was another below-average season, namely the fourth-consecutive season to have a below average number of storms despite the El Niño. Although it still saw many storms dealing a lot of damage to countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, China and more. Within the 2023 Pacific Typhoon Season, notable and well-known storms were Mawar (Betty), Doksuri (Egay), Saola (Goring) and Bolaven. Super Typhoon Doksuri caused devastating damage to affected countries, adding up to $15.5 billion in damages and caused 139 casualties, which made it the deadliest and costliest storm of the season.

This evening, Typhoon Saola remains very powerful and may still be strengthening, and is a Category 4 on the Saffir Simpson Scale.

The storm is expected to brush past the coast of southern Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau over the next 24 hours, bringing storm surge, strong winds and heavy rainfall, and up to 300mm of rain could fall in the region, causing flash flooding and landslides.

Typhoon Haikui is also intensifying as it limbers towards Taiwan, where it is expected to strike this weekend, where the storm is expected to drop huge amounts of rain over the island and on to eastern China, where rain totals could accumulate to over 500mm.

The storm is expected to make landfall as a Category 1 or 2 typhoon.

Ex-hurricane Idalia is now an extratropical cyclone and is approaching Bermuda, where it is expected to regenerate into a tropical storm, and watches are now in effect for the island.

The storm is expected to once again turn post-tropical by Tuesday.

In the West Pacific, Tropical Storm Kirogi is struggling, while a hemisphere away tiny Tropical Storm Jose is expected to remain short lived under the shadow of Hurricane Franklin, which itself is on its way out.

Further systems are expected to develop in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific, with trouble brewing in the Western Pacific again next week.

The tropics continue to bustle, with several strong storms active in multiple basins. Super Typhoon Saola is continuing west-northwestwards through the South China Sea, and Yellow Typhoon Warnings are in effect for parts of southern China, and Standby Signals are in effect in Hong Kong and Macau, with upgrades likely later. Saola is expected to strike or pass very close to the coast and rapidly weaken when land interaction takes hold, with signs of weakening beginning to show already. However, very strong winds, surge, and rainfall of up to 300mm could cause serious issues along the coast and inland.

Hurricane Idalia made landfall on Wednesday morning local time in western Florida, near Keaton Beach, as a strong Category 3. The storm’s catastrophic surge devastated some of the coastal communities in the area, and flooding concerns continue as the weakening storm continues through the Carolinas tonight.

Hurricane Franklin is still active near Bermuda, with tropical storm winds straddling the island.

Tropical Storms Haikui and Kirogi are both active in the Western Pacific, with the former likely to impact Taiwan and eastern China with more precipitation in that area. Rainfall of up to 400mm is likely across the mountains of Taiwan and in eastern China, with significant strengthening possible before it reaches land.

Elsewhere, other areas of interest could form later this week into the weekend in the Atlantic and Western Pacific.

]]>
Tropical Storm Franklin is starting to line up for its landfall in the Dominican Republic, which is expected to happen in a few days. Further west, Tropical Depression Nine is expected to become a brief tropical storm as it makes landfall in southern Texas later today and tonight. Both storms could deliver high rain rates and flash flooding is possible, particularly in the southern Dominican Republic where 20 inches (500mm) of rain could fall.

Franklin is expected to intensify after it leaves the Dominican Republic and passes the Turks and Caicos islands, where sea surface temperatures will improve. The storm may stall for a while and then move northwards and is expected to peak as a moderate hurricane.

Emily turned post-tropical earlier today, but there are signs that it could regenerate as it recurves northwards later this week.

Tropical Storm Gert was named yesterday and only lasted for a short time before weakening, and is not expected to linger for much longer. Another area of interest is located near Cape Verde and has a moderate chance of development as it moves westwards.

Hilary’s remnants persist over the western United States in the Eastern Pacific. Three areas of interest have low opportunities for development in the deep tropics, with the eastern system likely to cause large rainfall amounts over Costa Rica and Nicaragua regardless of development.

In the Western Pacific, an area of interest has a low chance of development and is expected to remain broad. The system will eventually head toward eastern Japan next week.

The Pacific is a hub of activity today, with Khanun still the largest threat passing the western coast of Kyushu as a strong tropical storm. Typhoon warnings are in effect for the region, with gale warnings extending as far east as Hyogo. Warnings are also now in effect for a large chunk of the South Korean coast, including the city of Busan. The storm is expected to make landfall in Korea in a couple of days, and continues to move slowly at the present time.

Typhoon Lan strengthened rapidly in the last 24 hours, and could seriously affect the Ogasawara island chain with winds of over 100 miles per hour and heavy rainfall, which could reach 500mm. Rainfall from both of these storms are likely to cause widspread areas of 300mm accumulations. Lan could continue towards the mainland of Japan, including the Tokyo region, and could make landfall there as a significant typhoon.

Hurricane Dora continues to roll on through the Central Pacific, and is now located well to the south of Hawaii. Its winds are still at high end Category 3 range, and only slow weakening is expected. The storm is expected to pass south of Johnstone Atoll, and could strike Wake Island as a weak tropical storm.

Several areas of interest are also active, with three low chance AOIs in the next seven days. At least one of these systems is more likely to form later on in the forecast period.
