Tropical Storm Eta reorganizing in the Gulf; record-breaking Subtropical Storm Theta forms

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season has officially surpassed the 2005 Atlantic season in terms of named storms.

Subtropical Storm Theta has formed in the open Atlantic Ocean,  located at 28.8 degrees north, 40.3 degrees west, about 995 miles southwest of the Azores. The storm has a maximum sustained winds of 50mph and a minimum pressure of 1000 millibars. The storm is moving east at 15mph, and is expected to have little to no effect to the Azores. The storm is also expected to transition to a fully tropical storm in twenty-four hours. The storm is the record 29th named storm, and has surpassed 2005’s record of 28 named storms.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Eta is reorganizing in the Gulf of Mexico. Located at 23 degrees north, 85.4 degrees west, the storm has a maximum sustained winds of 50mph and a minimum pressure of 995 millibars. The storm is moving southwest at 8mph, and is forecast to weaken to a tropical depression in approach to the Florida Panhandle.

Warnings

Currently, a Tropical Storm Watch, which means that tropical storm conditions is possible in the next 36 hours, is in effect from Eta for:

• the Cuban provinces of La Habana, Artemisa, Mayabeque, Pinar del Rio, and the Isle of Youth.
