Tropical Storm Julia a hurricane threat for Central America – Video Update
As has been anticipated for some time, Tropical Storm Julia has finally been named off the coast of northern Colombia, and is headed out over the more open waters of the southern Caribbean Sea – typically a hot spot for tropical cyclone intensification. On the other side lies the Central American peninsula, and the Colombian islands of Providencia and San Andrés, which are now under hurricane warnings in advance of the storm.
Julia is expected to gradually intensify and become a hurricane on Sunday as it draws close to the coast of Nicaragua, but earlier and faster intensification is possible, and the storm could peak beyond its Category 1 forecast. Rainfall is expected to be a significant threat from this storm in addition to its winds. Current forecasts suggest up to 300mm for parts of Nicaragua and Honduras, and remnant energy from the storm could also bring very high amounts to El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico.
