Typhoon Nanmadol is still a powerful Category 4 storm as it approaches the small islands to the south of Kyushu, the most southerly main island of Japan. Earlier peaking as a Category 5 super typhoon, Nanmadol still contains a large and destructive wind field, and will also deliver a significant storm surge to the landfall area, which is likely to be near the southern tip of Kyushu tomorrow. The storm will then cruise along the western coast of Kyushu before hooking northeastwards, ploughing through the rest of Kyushu, Shikoku, and western Honshu.

Rainfall could exceed 500mm in some of the mountain regions of Kyushu, particularly in the southeast. Rain totals of 250mm are expected across widespread tracts of Kyushu, western Honshu and Shikoku, with significant impacts likely to spread as far eastwards as Kyoto and Nagoya. The storm will gradually weaken as it moves through the Japanese islands, and emerge near the east coast as a weak tropical storm or post-tropical cyclone.
